For My Cancer Warriors
Cancer Warriors
Within a few months of each other, my husband and I recently experienced the loss of our loving Granddads due to cancer. Despite everything they were going through, they NEVER complained about anything and for most, you would’ve never even known they were sick.
God bless everyone – family, friends and everyone across the world – who have survived, are fighting the battle with cancer or even went on to rest peacefully due to their battle with cancer. Because of you, we’ve learned how to be stronger and fight harder. We’ve learned how to complain less and be more thankful. So, hats off to all of the Cancer Survivors and “Thrivers” (as the lovely Robin Roberts likes to refer to it). We admire your will to push forward.
So, I dedicate this to our loving Granddads and all of those affected by cancer.
We Didn’t See the Cancer. We Saw You.
We saw how thankful you were to see yet another day.
You weren’t overcome by the day’s troubles and obstacles.
You found a way to push through each day
And garnered enough strength to fight another day.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw you living life to the fullest.
From doing a little two-step on the dance floor
To humorous conversations over the phone,
You didn’t let cancer keep you down.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We know there was pain and discomfort
As the cancer was invading your body,
But we would’ve never even know
Because you never mumbled a complaint.
We didn’t see the cancer…
Despite how you were truly feeling,
You made it a point to always keep it positive.
Even on your worst days it was hard to tell
Because you always made it appear as if you were fine.
We didn’t see the cancer…
When we thought we would see you down and out
You surprised us and showed us how to keep living.
Humorous conversations on the phone and a little two-step on the dance floor
Showed us just how much strength you had left in you.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw a man who loved God and his family.
We saw a righteous man.
We saw a courageous man.
We saw a fighter.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw love.
We saw joy.
We saw patience.
We saw faith.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw the true meaning of gratefulness.
We saw how to push through no matter what.
We saw how to live beyond our fears
And embrace God’s plans for our lives.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw the true meaning of gratefulness.
And how to appreciate each and every moment of our lives.
Despite everything you were going through,
You never showed signs of giving up.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw the lineage of our families and
Realized why you were the patriarch of the family.
We saw the love that had been passed on throughout the years
And the love that you passed onto us even while you were sick.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw you looking beyond it.
We saw you looking at what was good.
We saw you looking toward a better day.
We saw you looking toward God.
We didn’t see the cancer…
We saw you looking back at us and telling us
“I’m okay. I’m resting now and I’m at peace.
All is well with my soul.
I love you.”
We didn’t see the cancer because we saw God through you.
