I’m Glad I Watched the Soul Train Train Awards
Initially, I was going to watch the Soul Train Awards later on DVR after I watched a few other shows, but I knew how much my mom wanted to watch it tonight, so we decided to watch that instead. I’m so glad I did because I thought it was a great show!
If I had to choose between the annual BET Awards or the annual Soul Train Awards, I think the choice would be easy for me. I’d go with Soul Train Awards. There’s something about the Soul Train Awards that takes us back to what has and continues to bring us together – real, quality music.
Side note: Shout out to Mario Van Peebles for acknowledging that the 90’s was one of the best decades for music – maybe not THE best, but arguably one of the best.
That’s why I’ve had somewhat of an issue with the BET Awards for the last couple of years. The Soul Train Awards fused a little of the old and a little of the new just perfectly. From start to finish, I enjoyed so much about the show, but here were some of my favorite highlights:
- The Opening – Chaka Khan and Evelyn Champagne King performing with Jennifer Hudson was definitely a great way to start the show off right! What more can I say?!
- The Host – Anthony Anderson was hilarious! Anthony definitely delivered just the right amount of humor and you could tell he was totally prepared unlike Chris Tucker who clearly ran out of material during the last BET awards. I’m such a fan of “Lustacy” now! They need to make an appearance on the Real Husbands of Hollywood. Carl Anthony Payne, hooked us yet again as one-third member of the group.
- “TAMARtian” Love – Whether you’re a fan or not, Tamar is definitely an inspiration to those of us who are pursuing our dreams. A lot of people gave up on her and she was dropped multiple times from a variety of labels, but to see her take home the award for “Best Female Artist” and hear her speech was definitely heartfelt and inspirational. Some would say it was a little dramatic for the Soul Train awards, but I just think she was really surprised.
- White People Love Soul Train Too – There’s something about music that brings all types of people together and the producers reminded us just how divers Soul Train was back in the day. Anybody remember Robin Thicke when he had long hair? Wolf Blitzer was ready to turn up and Jon B showed us that he still has it. Even Vanilla Ice convinced us he can still get the crowd excited with “Ice Ice Baby.”
- Keith Sweat is Still Begging and We Still Love It – Keith told us “some of ya’ll wish you were still begging like me,” and he’s right. A lot of these young R&B artists need to read a page from his book. He took us back down memory lane and reminded us why we love him so much, and Faith taking the stage with him was the icing on the cake.
- Dionne Warwick Tribute – She’s truly a living legend in the making and I had no idea how many songs were originally performed or written by her. To sell 100 million albums back then was not a small undertaking. Even though I was slightly confused about Chrisette Michele’s outfit choice during the tribute, I still thought all of them did a great job – Chrisette, Eric Benet, Gladys Knight (of course), Ron Isley and even little Bobby Valentino.
- Closing/Soul Train Line – Doug E. Fresh always knows how to close out a show. I would’ve loved to watch a little more of the Soul Train line especially after I saw Vanilla Ice and Wolf Blitzer dancing down the line. Even my mom got excited when Big Daddy Kane came on the stage!
Those were some of my favorite moments, but I’d love to hear what you all thought about the show. Feel free to share your favorite highlights of the night and what you enjoyed most.
In the meantime, I’ll be catching up on a few of the shows I missed tonight like The Walking Dead and Homeland. Thank God for DVR.
